Your Free Annual Credit Reports
|
These free credit reports give you the right to request free credit reports if, after applying for a loan, you were the last one to find out
that you had negative information on your credit report.
You can also request free credit reports through the federal law, FACTA.
This law provides you free credit reports from each of the 3 credit bureaus. You must be told if information in your file has been used against you.
A rule to remember is if you have been denied credit, insurance, or employment -- or any other action taken against you-- then you must be told the name, address and phone number of the agency that provided the information. Its hard to believe that we didn't always have this right.
One of the driving forces behind improvements to credit reporting specifically and to consumer rights in general has been the flooding tide of identity theft. Imagine not being able to dispute the contents of a credit report without having to go to court. No wonder identity theft reached pandemic proportions.
Free Reports from Credit Reporting Agencies
You may request a 'file disclosure' to obtain all the information about you in a credit reporting agency's files. The file disclosure is a free. Here is when you can request a free credit report: -
A person has taken adverse action against you because of information in your credit report; -
You are the victim of identify theft and place a fraud alert in your file; -
Your file contains inaccurate information as a result of fraud; -
You are on public assistance; -
You are unemployed but expect to apply for employment within 60 days. If none of those apply and you prefer to be proactive about the contents of your credit report, you may get a free disclosure every 12 months from each of the 3 major credit reporting agencies. Consider spreading out these free reports every 4 months. That way you can monitor changes (good and bad), deletions and additions to your credit reports at each of the credit bureaus.
The Fair Act free credit reports Annual Credit Report Service can be reached at 1-877-322-8228. You will go through a simple verification process over the phone.
Your reports will be mailed to you within 15 days. -
