The 3 major credit reports are provided by national credit bureaus. Credit bureaus are a clearinghouse for information on the lending risk rating of individuals or firms. These companies are often called a “consumer reporting agency”.
No one company is any “better” than the
other.
The reporting agencies are for-profit organizations. They compile and distribute the credit reports and personal information to lenders. This information may include payment habits, number of accounts, balance of accounts, and length and place of employment.
These agencies collect and sell information about how people handle credit. They issue reports that list how individuals manage their debts and make payments, how much untapped credit they have available and whether they have applied for any loans.
The reports are made available to individuals and to creditors who profess to have a legitimate need for the information. The three major national reporting bureaus are...
Equifax,
Experian (formerly TRW),
Transunion
You have the right to examine your credit reports. There is usually a small fee for these reports. However, if you have been denied credit, or a victim of identity theft there is no charge.
This is directed by law, the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act. This act also allows everyone to request for one free credit report each year from each of The Big Three.
Equifax P.O. Box 740241 Atlanta GA 30374-0241 (800) 685-1111 http://www.equifax.com
Experian (Formerly *TRW) P.O. Box 2002 Allen TX 75013-2002 (888) 397-3742 http://www.experian.com
Trans Union Corporation Consumer Disclosure Center P.O. Box 1000 Chester, PA 19022 (800)888-4213 http://www.transunion.com
Now the catch to the 'free' credit
reports is that they don't come with a
credit score. I always recommend
people who are trying to dispute items
on their credit report
get a 3-in-1 report. These are
affordable alternatives to the 'free'
ones and are a lot easier to read.
I can’t stress enough that you should
check over your credit report on a
regular basis. Often, mistakes can be
made and you can take steps to removing
that information so that you won’t be
denied credit.
In
fact, I've completed a mini-course that is available to you - Free..
